Islands

Gabriola and Protection Island are considered part of the Nanaimo area.  Both are accessed by ferry from Nanaimo. These are VERY different islands.

Protection Island has about 350 full time residents (mainly older as average age around 62) and has a ‘passenger only’ ferry to access it.  Most of the gulf islands have some issues with water but not Protection!  It is serviced by Nanaimo water and sewer.  Even the roads are maintained by the City of Nanaimo.  But, the roads are not paved and there are not any gas stations, stores etc…. on the island.  You will find the Dingy Dock Pub there with its claim to fame as being the only floating pub.  Its a cute little restaurant and pub.  How do you get around on Protection?  Most people use a golf cart though some homes do have vehicles.  Just know that you have to bring fuel over.  Perfect place for an electric car or just walk and get some exercise.  Lots of parks and beach access but schools are in Nanaimo so a commute is require.

 Gabriola Island-island of the arts has about 4,500 full time residents with about 43% 65+ but the majority in the 15-64 age bracket— has a vehicle ferry that services it and its just a short hop from Nanaimo. The city of Nanaimo does not service Gabriola so wells and septic are required.  Please do check carefully the water service as its not uncommon to have to buy water in the hotter months when wells are drier.  Beautiful island with lots to offer! 

There are many other islands to explore but I do not service them for real estate purposes.
