ladysmith/ chemainus / saltair

Ladysmith 2021 population of just under 9,000 people with an average age of 49  is a nice town with a big personality!  It is very quaint and has a real community feel. This is evidenced by the Christmas town light up and festivities.  The stores are quaint, everything is pretty much available  here with two primary grocers.  Many people do make regular treks into Nanaimo though for bigger shops.  Housing varies from the old character ones to new builds.  There is a lot of development going on there.  Ladysmith is built on a hill so you may find the sun goes down behind the hill early in the winter.  For that reason, you may want to consider buying near the top of the hill areas.  There are some really nicely developed communities in Ladysmith not to be missed. Some think of it as a bedroom community to Nanaimo but there are plenty of people who live and work there too.  There are lots of parks, schools, urgent care facility, recreation centre all located here.  Check it out, I am sure you will like it.

Chemainus 2021 population of 2914 people with an average age of 44 is a small hamlet below Ladysmith with murals everywhere.  Houses tend to be older though there are quite a few newer communities sprouting up so there is a variety housing options. There is a wide variety of strata, single family detached homes and even acreage in the area. There are basics here with a grocer, gas station, some cute stores especially in the summer.  The Chemainus Theatre is an excellent venue and offers great plays, good dinners and brunch options.  Its worth checking out for sure.  Chemainus is located on the harbour so is a very pretty place to be. 

Saltair 2021 population of 2,114 with an average age of 54 is a cute area between Ladysmith and Chemainus.  There are some beautiful waterfront properties here.  What used to be a summer recreation spot has become a great place to call home.  Saltair utility services occur  in a variety of ways so check out how services are provided when looking at a place there.  You will go into Ladysmith or Nanaimo likely for most of your supplies or medical care.  Duncan is another great option for medical as it has a good hospital.
